Examples of activities the Fund has supported in the past include:
Support for I-LYA Clubs hosting the US Sailing Junior Championships (Sears, Bemis, & Smythe Trophies); for US Sailing Junior Olympics held at a port on Lake Erie; support for juniors through the Challenge Team program; and, partial reimbursement for expenses for any I-LYA junior qualifying for the US Sailing Junior National Championships.
Twenty-three scholarships to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers of the I-LYA Junior Race Week and Powerboat Junior Navigation Contest.
I-LYA Junior Race Week:
Subsidize coaching and housing expenses and provide ongoing support.
I-LYA Junior Power Regatta:
Provide coaching/instructional support for I-LYA Junior Powerboat training.
The Yachtsmen’s Fund has established the Challenge Team, which will provide partial funding to encourage juniors to take part in important events (regattas & clinics) in addition to I-LYA and US Sailing ladder events. Primarily intended to encourage those who have not yet reached their sailing potential, this program is open to I-LYA juniors between the ages of 13 and 19. To qualify for funding the event or clinic must typically draw at least 20–25 entrants per class, and be of a level of competition found at the I-LYA Junior Championships Regatta.
The following are examples of the type of activity in which this program is intended to encourage participation:
Orange Bowl • Oyster Bay Clinic • Buzzard’s Bay • C.O.R.K • Nationals, Districts, or Mid-Winters
